What is the cause of the rash on my hands, feet?

Jan 17, 2010

HIV/AIDS is associated with a number of skin conditions but not all skin conditions are a sign of HIV/AIDS. It is, however, good that you got tested and got rid of all the anxiety.

Dear Doctor,
I have had rashes on my hands and feet since 2008. Some of them are like burns. I have tested for HIV/AIDS and syphilis three times and all the results were negative. What could be the problem?
David

Dear David,
HIV/AIDS is associated with a number of skin conditions but not all skin conditions are a sign of HIV/AIDS. It is, however, good that you got tested and got rid of all the anxiety.

Syphillis can cause a characteristic skin rash on the palms, especially in the early stages. Since your test was negative, it is unlikely to be the cause.

The more common causes of rashes in the palms include scabies, fungal skin infections and allergic skin reactions.

Allergic reactions may be due to substances that irritate the skin such as soaps, detergents and chemicals.

Other possible causes include
psoriasis, eczema and chicken pox. An itchy rash may also result from excessive dryness of the palms and feet. Heat rash, a common cause of a rash in children, can also be the cause of a skin rash in adults.

You can find out the exact cause of the rash by visiting a skin specialist who will diagnose and give you the best treatment. Fortunately, most of these conditions are treatable.
