TWO families in Awach and Paicho sub-counties in Gulu have given 300 acres of land to the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for an industrial park.

Reagan Okumu, the MP for Aswa county, told The New Vision over the weekend that UIA had wanted between 300-700 acres of land for the park.

The community of Aswa county had also offered the investment agency 300 acres, he added.

Okumu rubbished claims by some leaders that opposition politicians in Gulu were mobilising people not to give land to Uganda Investment Authority.

“We shall always give land for an industrial park in Acholi. UIA has the right to get land and are in touch with the families who offered them the land,” Okumu said.

He said the authority’s officials were in the process of agreeing with members of the two families on the cost of the land.

A preliminary survey of the offered land had already been carried out by officials of Gulu land office, the MP said.

The officials were ready to give optional areas where UIA can get more land for industrial park in the district, he added.

Sylvester Obol of Awach sub county, said the land is located at Oding village.

Gulu district land surveyors had inspected the land and the Government valuers were expected to establish the value of the land so that UIA can compensate the owners, Obol added.

Walter Ochora, the Gulu resident district commissioner, said land for the industrial park had earlier been identified at Koro sub county on the Gulu-Kampala highway, but due to the poor leadership in Acholi, the owners of the land refused to participate.
