PRINCE David Bogere Gabula has been named the caretaker Kyabazinga (king) of Busoga.

The decision was made by the Batimbito princes and princesses on Sunday during a meeting held at the palace of their mobiliser, Girison Kitimbo, in Buyala village, Jinja district.

Their spokesperson, Prince Godfrey Kyemba, said Gabula would lead the kingdom for five years.

“Since the eleven hereditary chiefs of Busoga have failed to agree on who to elect as Kyabazinga, we recommend Prince David Bogere Gabula, a neutral person, to act as the Kyabazinga of Busoga in a caretaker capacity for five years,” Kyemba said.

He said Gabula was expected to reconcile and unite the warring factions in the kingdom, in addition to organising elections for a new Kyabazinga.

Since the death of former Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki in 2008, attempts to elect a king have been futile.

Muloki’s heir, Edward Wambuzi, and Bugabula chief William Gabula Nadiope were each named Kyabazinga in two separate elections which were later nullified due to disputes.

Bogere Gabula promised to amend the kingdom constitution, saying it led to some of the problems that have rocked the kingdom since the death of Muloki.

“The Kyabazingaship is rotational and not hereditary. We want to streamline leadership so that each chiefdom knows when its turn to produce a Kyabazinga comes,” he stressed.
