The Police in Mpigi are investigating the circumstances under which a Church of Uganda archdeacon was found hanging in his room recently in a suspected suicide.

Can. John Martin Kiwanuka of Mpenja in Gomba was found dead inside his single room.

The central region Police publicist, Lameka Kigozi, said one of Kiwanuka’s sons, who is also a priest, Rev. Wilberforce Ssekisiko, reported the death to the Police.

“The Police found the clergyman’s body still hanging inside his room. We did the postmortem examination and allowed relatives to go ahead with burial arrangements,” he said.

The officer in charge CID at Mpigi Police station, Joshua Owor, said the Police were investigating reports that the priest committed suicide after he was accused of defiling and making a girl pregnant.

He added that there were reports that before his death, the priest had an exchange with the one of the parents of the alleged victim who reportedly threatened to take the matter to the Police.

But the Police said they had not been able to trace the alleged victim.

“We wanted to interview and test her to find out whether she was pregnant. But after the death of the priest, the relatives have refused to allow the Police access the victim,” Owor said.
