A group of Democratic Party elders has advised the party president general, Ssebaana Kizito, to halt preparations for the election of new party leaders and other activities until internal wrangles are solved.

The group calling itself Central Region Elders’ Forum, mainly composed of founding members, yesterday issued a statement addressed to Ssebaana, expressing their dissatisfaction over what they called “DP internal squabbles”.

Two rival factions are currently making preparations to hold parallel national delegates conferences to elect new leaders.

“The delegates conferences should be put to a halt until we resolve our internal wrangles,” said the statement signed by Deogratius Mukasa Mpotwa, one of the elders.

Members of the group include Joseph Kimbowa, Deo Mukasa Mpotwa, Matia Ssenyondwa from Kyaddondo East, and Ssalongo Ssekyalo from Nkumba in Entebbe.

Kimbowa, the leader of the DP youth wing in 1954 when the party was founded, hosted the meeting yesterday at his home in Bwebajja, on the Entebbe road.

While handing over the document to the DP national organising secretary, Deo Njoki, Kimbowa, said he would die unhappy if the party leaders failed to heed to the party mission.

To avoid more confusion, the group asked the DP leadership to withdraw all pending court cases immediately and leave the party national executive committee to plan for the delegates conference.

Njoki said a group of Baganda, who failed to understand the political direction of the party, was causing the current crisis.
