EVANDER Holyfield’s financial woes are the reason behind his challenge for the World Boxing Federation heavyweight title against South African champion Francoise Botha. The contest is scheduled for Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, on February 20.
Sources in the US indicate that the four-time former champion is trying to raise child support to ex-wife Janice Itson. However according to entertainment website TMZ, Holyfield’s income has dwindled significantly compared to what he was earning ten years ago. It is not yet known how much Holyfield will earn from the fight with the South African boxer.
The 47-year old has been in financial trouble the last several years. He was close to losing his mansion and is reported to have several other children from different women that he has to support financially.
The fight is being promoted by Baltic Pro Box Promotions. It is the first major boxing contest in East and Central Africa since the “Rumble in the Jungle†between Mohammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974 in the former Congo Kinshasa, now DR Congo.
