RADIO and television presenters are to undergo training in preparation for the 2011 elections.

“The training is aimed at equipping presenters with skills and knowledge to overcome the challenges that come with elections,” the research officer for Deepening Democracy Programme, Gilbert Matabi, said.

Matabi pointed out the need to improve the quality of news and broadcasting. “We do not want to experience more closure of radio stations as we approach 2011,” Matabi said at a consultative meeting at Hotel Africana, Kampala on Wednesday.

He said the public is concerned about national security, culture, gender and human rights, so broadcasters should be knowledgeable when giving information.

Uganda Broadcasting Council last year closed Akaboozi kubbiri, Radio Sapentia and CBS for reportedly inciting violence.
According to John Mayiga of Uganda Media Development Foundation, the training will focus on media laws, glossary of broadcasting, codes of ethics, research and verification.

The chairman of National Association of Broadcasters, Capt. Francis Babu, said broadcasters need training as radios and televisions will be involved in civic education.

He said broadcasters should grasp codes of conduct and disclosed that the BBC is willing to train radio journalists in the country.
