OVER 1000 pupils and students from Rubaga Division in Kampala are to benefit from school fees bursaries.

The bursaries are a fulfilment of a pledge made by the chairman of the division, Peter Ssematimba, during his campaigns seven months ago.

On Friday, parents and their children gathered at the division headquarters to fill the bursary forms and witness the launch of the programme. By last Friday, 950 beneficiaries had enrolled for the bursaries.

“During my campaign, you told me that your major problem was school fees and I pledged to get a solution. We are here to celebrate this achievement,” Ssematimba said.

He reportedly got the bursaries from different schools through partnership with administrators of the schools.

“So far, 47 schools have given us bursaries and more have picked interest. I hope to get 2,500 bursaries next year,” Ssematimba said. He thanked the schools for their support.

He urged other political leaders to initiate such programmes so as to support the Government in its efforts to promote universal education.

He said the bursaries were for all residents of Rubaga irrespective of their political affiliation.

Ssematimba revealed that he plans to ask for loans from the Government and foreign organisations to help the supportive schools.
