THE Democratic Party legal adviser, Elias Lukwago, has warned the two DP presidential candidates, Samuel Lubega and Norbert Mao, against promoting personal ambitions at the expense of party unity.
The DP is entangled in internal wrangles between two factions which has led to the setting of parallel delegates conferences on February 16 and 26.
The disagreement emerged from the High Court ruling that nullified the election of Mathias Nsubuga as the secretary general. One group accepted the verdict while another rejected it and referred the matter to the Court of Appeal.
The personalities vying to become DP flag bearers include Lubega, Mao, and city mayor Nasser Sebaggala.
“It is being a sadist for one to see the house on fire and all he is bothered about is to save personal property instead of saving the lives of the rest of the family,†Lukwago said.
Lukwago dismissed reports that he belongs to the faction that supports Lubega.
“As a legal adviser of the party, I feel offended if somebody alleges that I belong to a faction in DP. Both Lubega and Mao have a duty to be devoted to the party interests,†he said.
He cautioned both candidates to prevail over their supporters and promote reconciliation.
“As a man I hold in high esteem, I am surprised Mao does not realise that the party interest of reconciliation should be above self-promotion. How will it benefit Mao or Lubega to be president of only one DP faction?†Lukwago wondered.
