THE US government is to construct a $6m (sh1b) agricultural produce storage warehouse at Reberon village in Kapchorwa district.

The six-month project, meant to promote production among small-holder farmers, starts this month.
It will be implemented through the World Food Programme (WFP)

The warehouse, which will store up to 2,000 tonnes of grain, will benefit over 3,015 farmers who are members of the Kapchorwa Commercial Farmers’ Association.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony last week, the WFP country director, Stanlake Samkange, said the project was aimed at increasing farmers’ yields and household incomes.

“WFP would like to buy quality food in Uganda. With modern warehouses at various locations in the country, we can realise this. We are focusing on value addition and reducing post-harvest losses,” he added.

Samkange said the post-harvest losses, that are at 40%, are due to lack of proper storage, drying and cleaning equipment.

The US ambassador, Jerry Lanier, said his government would continue supporting the agricultural sector in Uganda because the country has the potential of becoming a food basket for east and central Africa.
