THE last time Moses Kipsiro competed against Boniface Kiprop in a local competition was at the national cross country championships in Sironko in 2005. But they treated the spectators to an anti climax.

After putting up a good show, leaving all the other competitors over 200m behind, they decided to jog to the finishing line.

But this will not happen in today’s Puma-sponsored national cross country championships in Amuria.

The athletes do not only have to prove their worth after last season’s not so impressive performance, but have also been urged by the national association to compete until the finish line. Kipsiro is a two-time champion while Kiprop was a champion from 2003 to 2005.

“We have told them that they have to race or else they will put the sport into disrepute. It will even be made more competitive by the improvement of more athletes,” said federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru. The duel is expected to be one of the most competitive races.

Geoffrey Kusuro, James Kibet, Isaac Kiprop, Bejamin Kiplagat, Stephen Kiprotich, Ben Siwa are the other stars to battle for the four places on the national senior men’s team.
