THE Alur King, Rwoth Ubimu Phillip Olarker Rauni III, has installed Dr. Edwin Wathum Jalusiga as the new prime minister of the kingdom.

The king made a cabinet reshuffle in December, 2009.

Wathum, who replaced Prince Lawrence Angala, was installed in a traditional ceremony presided over by the king at Atyak Kaal Winam palace in Zombo district last week.

The ceremony was attended by elders and 51 clan leaders representing Alur Kingdom in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Wathum, who is a lecturer at Kyambogo University, now takes on the name ‘Jal-kwiyo’, a title of respect for one who initiates peace and makes things calm. He dropped the name Jalusiga immediately.

The chiefs from Zeu Opano, who carried out the ritual ceremony, said the exercise removes the traditional powers of carrying out rituals from the former premier, Angala.

“He will never be addressed with the titles of Jalumvor Jalusonge II again because his powers of Jadipu have been removed by the same people who gave him the mandate before he was dropped by the king on December 26, 2009,” said a sub-chief of Zeu Opano, Aol Ajwoga Bicopungo.

In a speech after the occasion, Rauni III said by installing Wathum, the Alur cultural administration would be put in order.

He appealed to the Alur in Uganda and Congo to welcome and respect Wathum saying he is strong, a development-oriented person and would unite them.

In his acceptance speech, Wathum promised to unite the Alur and fight poverty in the communities through establishing development projects for the youth and women.
