THIS time round, Valentine’s falls on a Sunday, the day many people choose to stay at home. You can have a special romantic Valentine’s at home without spending a lot of money.

Bernard Balikowa, a counsellor, says couples need to celebrate Valentine’s without worrying about where the finances will come from. He advises couples which cannot afford to go on a date to increase intimacy at home. Here are some tips:

Spa night
You (a couple) can have a hot bath filled with rose petals. Accompany the bath with a glass of wine and chocolate. Look back at the olden days and reflect on the time you started dating. What is it about your spouse that gave you butterflies in the stomach? Work at recapturing these fond memories.

Poetry and jokes
Write a love poem on the bathroom mirror. Share jokes that have meaning to just the two of you.

Candles
Set up a romantic candle-lit atmosphere in your bedroom and watch a romantic movie with your partner. Accompany the movie with wine. This can help rekindle the romance.

Flowers
Flowers portray romance, especially for most women. A bowl or dish filled with rose petals adds romance and creates a pleasant scent at dinner.

Massage
Buy scented oil or a massage lotion. Place a blanket and pillow on the floor, have your partne lie down and treat him or her to a massage.

Communicate
Communication is key in keeping romance alive. Text or call your spouse just to let them know you are thinking about them. If you are feeling a little frisky, let your partner know.

You can also have dinner in a different part of the house, say the gardens. Prepare a special meal or have food delivered to your house.

Focus on how special your partner is and appreciate the things he or she has done for you. The little things you do everyday will make your partner appreciate you more.

You can stay at home and still have a good time
