FIVE people, who allegedly burnt to death two primary school pupils over a land dispute in Amuru district, have been arrested by the Police.

According to the Police, the five members of one family in Layima village, Pailyec parish on Monday night attacked the home of Walter Omony and David Ocaya and burnt two pupils of Layima Primary School to death, while they were asleep.

The deceased identified as Grace Acayo, 13, and Christine Adong, 14, were sleeping in the house of their unidentified brother who had travelled to Lakang village to work.

It is also reported the attackers had gone to burn to death the girls’ brother whom they are accusing of stealing their land in Lakang village.

The regional Police spokesman, Johnson Kilama, identified the suspects as Michael Oyima (38), Polino Ouna (63) and his son only identified as Ouna (36), Margaret Adong (60) and Florence Akongo (30).

“We shall charge these people with murder. They have all been transferred from Amuru to Gulu central police for prosecution,” Kilama said.

The Amuru sub-county LC5 councillor, Gilbert Olanya, explained that the rampant murders and other problems in Amuru sub-county are being caused by land disputes.

He said families are killing each other over land in return villages in Amuru sub-county. “There are many petty land disputes which are resulting into deaths and families fighting each other,” said Olanya.
