EDITOR—The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has installed roadside barriers on a section of the Northern Bypass between Kamuli zones A and B in Kireka and Ntebettebe zone in Bweyogerere at a point where motorists and boda bodas leave the by-pass to reach Jubilee Christian Centre and other areas in Ntebettebe zone.

Residents of Ntebettebe, Mbalwa and Kazinga zones in Bweyogerere, Kireka zone A and Kamuli zones A and B can no longer easily commute between Bweyogerere and Kireka on boda bodas and motor vehicles.

The most viable option is to walk, yet this is a vast area.

Boda bodas have increased their charges as a result of the barriers since they have to ride longer distances instead of using the short direct route.

Whose interest is UNRA serving?

Why are they behaving as if they constructed the road in a desolate land? Besides, the road is not living up to its touted purpose of de-congesting the city centre. It has light traffic throughout the day as the city centre is choking on traffic jams caused by commercial vehicles.

As UNRA works towards lessening the suffering of Kampala motorists in traffic jams, they should avoid causing suffering to people who reside near the Northern Bypass. Open up the road and save residents the trouble of using alternative routes.
