According to relatives and friends, Brenda was a joyful and happy person. Joy Karamuzi, the deceased’s mother, was devastated by the death of her fourth-born daughter, whom she describes as a very lovable person.
According to the deceased’s mother, Brenda was last seen on January 21 but friends and relatives, realised she was missing on Tuesday 26, when they could not trace her on phone.
Her father, Henry Karamuzi, is lost for words. Karamuzi is currently a member of Rakai district Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The retired under-secretary in the local government ministry was appointed a committee member by virtue of his seniority and experience in the civil service.
Brenda’s bestfriend Carolyne Nibarungyi, who says she knew the deceased since 2001, last saw her friend on January 21 when they had lunch together. Nibarungyi says Brenda’s cell phone went off on January 26.
“I tried to call her on Tuesday (January 26) but her phone was off the whole day. We wanted to meet since it was a public holiday. I later sent her a short message asking her to spend a night at my place because I had a bad feeling, but she never responded,†Nibarungyi says. Other friends say Brenda was social and loved partying.
Nibarungyi contacted her friends and the deceased’s relatives, who all had no idea about Karamuzi’s whereabouts.
Her sister Amelia Karamuzi describes her as “the most selfless person I have ever met.†Born on April 7, 1984, Brenda went to Shimoni Demonstration School for primary, Katikamu Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School for O’ level and St. Lawrence Creamland Campus for A’ level.
She graduated at Uganda Christian University Mukono with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication.
Her first job was at NTV as a receptionist. She later moved to AYA group of companies as their public relations officer. At the time of her death, Karamuzi was working with Uganda Securities Exchange at Worker’s House in Kampala.
James Mwangutsya, the deceased’s first cousin, says they did not want to speculate the cause of Karamuzi’s death but were relying on information from the Police.
Police suspect that Brenda was killed and dumped in the septic tank. They arrested and interrogated Nkurunjira, his friend Christopher Bagagaruka and house help, Fred Ssempijja.
Bagagaruka has since been released since there is no evidence linking him to the death. But Nkurunjira, commonly known as Tonku was on Friday (February 5) charged with the murder of Brenda in Makindye magistrate’s court. He denied the charges.
Earlier, on February 1, a sombre mood engulfed relatives, friends and family at All Saints Church in Nakasero who had gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased. Thereafter, her body was laid to rest in Kakyeera, Rakai district.
