EXPERIENCED Herbert Ebayo will lead Uganda’s hunt for medals as the Africa junior badminton championships start today at Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya. Shamim Bangi will also captain the girls’ side in the event, which had attracted foreign players from six countries by press time.

Players from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Algeria, Mauritius and Burundi had arrived, while Egypt was expected to jet in today morning ahead of the draws at 9am.

Ebayo, who led St. Margaret College Makerere to gold in the inaugural All Africa Schools badminton championships in Mauritius three months ago, has been given the mantle to captain the boys’ team of seven.

The bronze medallist at both the Africa U-17 and Africa U-19 championships is expected to use his experience against some of the continent’s promising players in the four day event which opens the international badminton action in Kampala.

According to national coach William Kabindi, the players had picked form after shifting their training from plastic to the feather shuttles.

“They had to learn to regulate the speed of the shuttles but I can confidently say that they are prepared for the event,” said Kabindi.

The boys’ team has Ebayo, Rogers Bakaki, Daniel Muhigo, Innocent Kabagambe, Chris Senono and David Senono.

The girls’ team has Bangi, Daisy Nakalyango, Jovia Kyomuhendo, Sylvia Nalunga, Mable Namakajo, Scovia Nabasirye, Brenda Mugabi and Brenda Awori.
