THE Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) this year has registered the highest number of first class degrees since its establishment in the late 1980’s.
A total of 52 students, out of about 1,500 who will be graduating today, passed with First Class degrees. 618 others passed in Second Class Upper, 649 in Second Class Lower and 19 got a Pass degree.
In 2007, out of the 731 students who were awarded degrees in different disciplines, only 14 got First Class. The number went up slightly the following year.
A First Class honours degree is an academic award to students at undergraduate and post-graduate level, either by examination, course work or thesis.
It is the highest level of degree awarded in most universities; and is taken to indicate high academic achievement and ability. Many holders of First Class degrees go on to further academic study, becoming researchers, academicians and professors. The university will hold its seventh graduation today at the main campus in Mbale.
