UGANDA is to receive sh84b from the Global Fund to support activities against HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Dr. Kenya Mugisha, the director of clinical services in the Ministry of Health, said the malaria funds are expected next week in the form of 7.2 million insecticide treated mosquito nets.

Part of the financial support will go towards the purchase of artemisinin-based combination drugs used in the treatment of malaria and the rest for purchasing anti-retroviral drugs.
Global Fund had suspended funding to Uganda after mismanagement of earlier funds in 2005. Three ministers and several employees lost their jobs after they were cited in the scandal.

In an interview, Mugisha said Global Fund would disburse the funds in June.
Mugisha said accountability measures had been established to ensure proper utilisation of the funds.

Global Fund, created in 2002, finances the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria through partnerships with governments, the private sector and affected communities. The organisation approved money for more than 572 programmes in 140 countries.

It provides a quarter of international financing for AIDS, two-thirds for tuberculosis and three-quarters for malaria.
