BRIAN Umony struck a wonder goal as Supersport United clinched the ABSA Premiership title despite eventually losing their fixture against Bidvest Wits on Wednesday night.
In the build-up to this game, United had hardly needed help in retaining their place at the top of the table throughout the season.
But for once they needed help and got it from an unlikely source as Jomo Cosmos’ 2-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns rendered their loss to Timothy Batabaire’s Bidvest irrelevant. To win one league title is great; to win three in succession is momentous and Ugandans Umony and Denis Onyango were proud of their first and third league medal respectively.
“It’s certainly a great feeling winning the title in my first season,†said Umony, who beat Batabaire to head home United’s equaliser on 32 minutes.
Umony almost scored the second minutes later but it were Bidvest that got the winner against the run of play.
