What it takes to convert to another religion

The Cannon Law allows Catholics to may marry from a different faith after asking for permission or a dispensation from the bishop.

The Cannon Law allows Catholics to may marry from a different faith after asking for permission or a dispensation from the bishop.

If your partner is a baptised Protestant, they only need ‘permission’ from a Catholic church leader. However, if one is a non-believer in Jesus Christ, say a Muslim, they have to request a ‘dispensation’.

You sign forms with two statements. One reaffirming your faith and pledging to remain in the Catholic Church and another promising to raise the children as Catholics”.

Fr. Deo Sonko says, like most religions, the Catholic Church encourages Catholics to marry fellow Catholics because it is easier for them to incorporate their faith into their marriage and raise their children in this same faith.

Islam
The Sharia Law says: “It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a kafir (non-Muslim), because the man has authority over his wife and it is not permissible for a kafir to have authority over a Muslim woman.”

Eddy Kasozi, the Imam at Makerere University, says the Qur’an prohibits such marriage. “Allah says, ‘And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al Mushrikun (atheists) until they believe (in Allah Alone)’ (Al-Baqarah: 221) And “Never will Allah grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers” (An-Nisaa’: 141).”

Islam does not recognise other faiths, so conversion from Islam to another religion is forbidden. Sheikh Sulaiman Kakeeto, the head of the Tablique community, adds that if a person is converted to another religion, the Sharia Law prescribes death.

Church of Uganda
It is acceptable for an Anglican to marry a non-believer, provided they can convert them to the faith.

However, Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi says if a woman decides to convert to her husband’s religion, that is all right since the Bible teaches that the husband is the head of the family. So a wife is obliged to follow her husband.

Seventh Day Adventists
Pastor Nsereko Male from the Seventh Day Adventists Church says one who converts to another religion ceases to be an Advent.

“Mixed religions cause couples a lot of stress in a marriage. If one spouse observes the Sabbath and the other does not, a natural distance can develop between them. It’s up to the strength of character of each spouse to overcome that gap.”

Orthodox Church
Orthodox canon law forbids marriage with a non-Christian.

An Orthodox Christian is not allowed to marry except in an Orthodox wedding service, celebrated by an Orthodox priest.
The non-Orthodox Christian partner needs to be baptised in water.

The couple needs to agree to raise their children as Orthodox. If the Orthodox partner ignores these stipulations, they lose their sacramental privileges.
