Namirembe Cathederal fundraising starts

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday contributed sh50m to the renovation of St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe, and offered a new car to Bishop Wilberforce Luwalira.

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday contributed sh50m to the renovation of St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe, and offered a new car to Bishop Wilberforce Luwalira.
Addressing the 10:00 O’clock service at the cathedral yesterday, Museveni, quoting a Runyankole proverb, said when small animals work together: they can kill a snake.
“If you get all Christians in this diocese, say about 2,000, and each contributes sh1m, the sh2b you need would already be collected,†he said.
“Christians should stop inviting bad luck by behaving as if they are poor when they are not.â€
He advised them to each contribute according to their means.
Present at the service was Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi, who contributed sh5m.
Museveni said our grandparents did not spare any effort when they built the church with far less technology during their time.
“I have taken the place of 50 of those people by donating sh50m. If you remain with a deficit after going through the diocese, come and inform me,†he said, drawing laughter.
At Luwalira’s consecration, the President had promised him a car to help him move around the diocese.
He handed him the Pajero four-wheel drive parked in the Church compound.
Museveni said although in his youth he disagreed with the born-again group, he still remains a stead fast Christian.
“Christianity is not these buildings or pulpits. It is our belief,†he said.
Retired Bishop Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo, who delivered the sermon, thanked the President for his contribution, saying a good car not only reflects the bishop’s stature, but also that of the church.
He thanked him for not splitting the church by taking sides, but striving to unite all and granting them freedom of worship.
