YOUR subject combination is common in most schools, and this could be the reason you are doubtful of the courses to pursue at university.

Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa, the dean of the Makerere University Faculty of agriculture, says biology, agriculture, and geography can secure you admission for a number of courses in various universities and higher education institutions.

Kyamanywa says your combination makes you eligible for a number of agricultural courses. However, this will depend on a number of factors like how you will perform in each of the subjects.

You need to understand how cut-off points are calculated. The points depend on the number of applicants per course and the capacity of the faculties. Under the weighting criteria, all subjects taken at A’ level are grouped into four categories — essential, relevant, desirable and others.

For a given candidate, not more than three subjects taken at principal level carry a weight of 3, 2, or 1. Principal subjects in excess of three are designated as ‘others’ and weighed at 0.5. Not more than two subjects are designated as essential. A pass in a subject taken at subsidiary level such as general paper carries one point.

Nonetheless, a Bachelor of Science in agricultural land use and management offered at Makerere University is one of the courses you can enroll for. To qualify for this programme, Kyamanywa says you must get principal passes in biology and agriculture, because they are essential.
Another programme you can qualify for is Bachelor of Agricultural and Rural Innovations. This has biology, agriculture, and geography as its essential subjects in which you must also score principal passes.

Similarly, principal passes in biology and agriculture can qualify you for a Bachelot of Science in Horticulture or a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or Agrobusiness management.

Bachelor of Environmental Science also has biology, geography and agriculture as some of its essential subjects. This means you can be admitted for it if you pass these three subjects well. This course provides you with adequate knowledge and skills in environmental conservation and management.

Other courses include Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Science.

You can apply for these courses at Makerere and Kyambogo universities. However, before you apply, find out which of your subjects are essential for the courses you want to pursue.
