Akengyeya beats 23 groups to Radio West cultural prize

Akengyeya emerged the winner in the ongoing Radio West cultural extravaganza promotion. The group scored 227 points, defeating 23 others that gathered at Kabingo Grounds in Isingiro district last Friday.

Akengyeya emerged the winner in the ongoing Radio West cultural extravaganza promotion. The group scored 227 points, defeating 23 others that gathered at Kabingo Grounds in Isingiro district last Friday.

They competed in items like folk solo, folk song and traditional dance. The promotion, sponsored by Radio West and Orumuri newspaper in partnership with Igongo Cultural Centre, was officially launched in Bushenyi district last week.

Akengyeya went home with a cash prize of sh150,000 and a trophy donated by the presidential adviser, Ignatius Katetegyirwe.

Nzamba Actors, who came second, got a sh100,000 prize; while Kibona, who came third, bagged sh50,000. Other winners got T-shirts.

Grace Kakwenza, the vice-chairperson of Isingiro district, said the event promoted unity and lessons on dance, music and cultural norms.

Radio West’s Alex Mugarura said the next promotion would be held in Mbarara on March 5, and another on March 6, in Ntungamo.

Other groups which took part were Kyasonga, Ruhimbo, Mabona Music Drama Group, Isingiro North, Karo Karungi Anti-AIDS, Nyarubungo Women’s Group and Booma Drama Actors. Others were Kasuwina Valley, Kyabishuho Women’s Group, Ankole Cultural Drama, Nyakitunda Drama Actors, Mwimukye Tweyambe, Kyabwemi Bakyara and Abanzira Bentunguka.
