- City businessman James Mulwana is very cautious about his life. Appearing before the CHOGM probe committee recently, Mulwana was offered a cup of tea by the MPs, but he declined to take it before the committee chairman, Nandala Mafabi, tasted it. “Thank you, Mr. Chairman, but can you, please taste it. What if it has poison?†he asked, sending MPs into laughter. Mafabi asked MP Saleh Kamba to taste the tea on his behalf, which he did.
Kutesa, Ssekikubo
- Foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa and Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Ssekikubo have been political rivals for years. Those who had hopes of seeing the two reconciling soon, might have to wait for sometime. After clashing at a fundraising function at a church in Lwemiyaga recently, each of them rushed to report, accusing the other of starting the scuffle. However, whereas Ssekikubo reported his case to a police post, Kutesa went to the Inspector General of Police.
Tough Mafabi
- MP Nandala Mafabi believes no one is above the law. On Wednesday, he ordered Saatchi and Saatchi officials to call their colleague, Odrek Rwabwogo, to explain some of the CHOGM queries. However, the officials kept saying that Rwabwogo was on his way. When he turned up towards the end of the meeting, Mafabi said: “I am told you have been meeting members in the corridors of Parliament. You should keep time next time. If you do not, you will see where power lies.â€
Hot seat
- Some seats are so hot that they can only be held by senior members, not juniors. And the works ministry permanent secretary, Charles Muganzi, knows this very well. Appearing before the CHOGM probe committee recently, one of Muganzi’s procurement officers was asked to exchange seats with him such that he would face the chairman directly. However, after making her submission, the officer immediately returned to her seat. “You stay there,†the chairman said. “You think this is an easy seat? It is so hot that she cannot stand it. She prefers sitting behind,†Muganzi said.
