Can a male virgin break a girl’s virginity?
Dear Dr,

Can a virgin male who is not circumcised break the hymen while having protected sex with a girl?

Would this cause a lot of bleeding and transmission of an STD in case one partner is infected?

Fred

Dear Fred,

The hymen is a membrane usually present at the entrance to a woman’s vagina if she has never had penetration.

It breaks to allow the erect penis to enter the vagina during sex. When the hymen breaks, there is usually a little bit of bleeding. This amount of bleeding varies a lot. Some women do not have any.

Any male, circumcised or uncircumcised can break the hymen with penetration. The ‘protection’ or condom, only prevents the transmission of disease and pregnancy.

The bleeding which occurs when the hymen is broken is usually little. If both partners have been virgins, then there is no STD present since both have never had sex. The bleeding will not lead to transmission of an STD.
