THE Government has set aside sh10b to handle the emergency situation following the landslides that affected several communities in different parts of the country. This was announced by Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi on Friday.

The money, he said, will go towards ongoing relief efforts to rehabilitate the communities affected by the landslides in the eastern and western parts of Uganda.

While touring the affected villages of Bulucheke and Bukalasi in Bududa district, the Prime Minister apologised on behalf of the Government for the destruction caused by the landslides.

“The Government is truly sorry for the incident in which our people lost their lives,” he said.

“We are dedicated to finding a permanent solution to this disaster so that when it reoccurs, it does not cause deaths and loss of property.”

Nsibambi appealed to the people to vacate landslide- prone areas and promised that the Government would relocate them to safer places.

He also promised the victims more Government support to help them cope with the disaster.

A total of 900 bags of beans and maize flour as well as 6,000 blankets have been supplied to the victims so far, he said.

Other assistance given includes 3,500 kitchen sets containing saucepans, plates and cups, 2,000 jerry cans and 1,200 tents.

He promised 25 metric tonnes of food, safe water and medical care, adding that two vehicles provided by the Government were already helping with the supply of clean water from Mbale.

“The Government is also providing medical assistance through medical teams that are already operating in the area,” he said.

Nsibambi dismissed reports by some members of the opposition that the Government had not responded to the disaster but left the work to NGOs.

“Besides searching for dead bodies, the Police and the army will ensure that criminals do not take advantage of the situation to rob victims,” he said.

A total of 83 dead bodies have been recovered while 17 people have been rescued. Over 272 people are still missing.
