UGANDA Sports Press Association (USPA) and uganda telecom have extended their partnership to 2012. The move follows the end of a two-year sponsorship contract.

The new deal includes funding the USPA gala for another two years, the revived sports journalists’ awards and the scribes’ monthly assemblies.

This year’s Sports Personality of the Year gala is slated for March 20 at Hotel Africana. It will cost sh90m, up from sh77m for the 2008 event.

During a signing ceremony held at the telecom company’s head office in Kampala yesterday, the marketing and communications manager Mark Kaheru noted that they renewed the sponsorship following a fruitful partnership with USPA.

“The partnership with USPA is the biggest and it is going to be different this year,” Kaheru remarked.

“We intend to make the (2009) gala bigger because the bill has increased.”

Kaheru and chief marketing and product development officer Mohamoudou Konkobo signed on behalf of Uganda telecom while USPA president Douglas Mazune and the secretary Ahmed Hussein represented the scribes body.

The USPA monthly assembly will now be funded to a tune of sh2.5m up from sh1.5m.

The company will also fund the trip by USPA executives members to the International Sports Press Association congress due in Turkey, July.

Mazune assured the company officials of a solid relationship even after his term ends in October.

“Thank you for keeping with USPA until 2012,” Mazune said.

“We pledge to uphold your brand. With or without Douglas, our members will move along with the you.”

Mazune will not be eligible for re-election in line with the association’s constitution when his term expires.
