THE Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a statement clarifying on the ongoing registration exercises by political parties and the voter registration it is conducting countrywide.

The chairman, Eng. Badru Kiggundu, said the EC is aware that political parties are registering their supporters in preparation for their primary elections.

“These registrations should not be confused with the continuous voter registration being conducted by the commission countrywide,” Kiggundu said in a March 4 press release.
He stressed that the register for the EC is independent from the ones being prepared by the parties.

“People who wish to register as voters in the national general elections are encouraged to do so at the EC offices or other designated areas.”

Kiggundu said before the 2011 polls, the commission would conduct a general update exercise from April 15 to May 15 for those who might have missed the opportunity to register.

“The public is further informed that those who have already registered are not allowed by law to register again.”
He said those who registered but have lost their voters cards should report the loss at their nearest Police stations and should not register afresh.

On the Padyere county by-election, Kiggundu said the commission has set Friday March 5 as the deadline for registration of voters in the constituency.

“Registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Padyere constituency will not be conducted after this date,” he said.
The byelection is to replace MP David Ringe Chan, who died recently.
