The marriage institution has outlived its usefulness
EDITOR—Social scientists and researchers have postulated that polygamy is but a manifestation of the marriage institution. Also, that the institution emerged to constitute the family as the basic unit of production and reproduction in the course of societal development.

If these posits are acceptable, then Parliament should dissuade itself from discussing polygamy that is a mere symptom of the marriage institution. Rather, it should consider whether or not the institution still serves the purpose for which it arose in social set-ups.
Parliament is bound to come to the conclusion that at the current levels of scientific and technological advancement, the family is no longer the basic unit of production of material goods and services or reproduction of the labour force.
A man only needs a sperm, an ovum and a surrogate mother while a woman only needs a sperm since she is able to carry the foetus herself. One can hire labour and use high-tech to produce goods and services. It will become obvious that marriage is no longer useful and should be shunned! Lulu Itipa Kampala
