Political prostitutes in MUK guild race

THE race for guild president has become so interesting. What makes it interesting is that the rallies are spiced up with logistics. Listening to future ‘Barrack Obamas’ ranting intellectual speeches full of all the figures of speech leaves one mesmerised.

Rhetorics like “gallant Makerenians, I am the incurable virus that will infect Makerere with reforms that will leave people going to research institutes and learn to emulate me,” are commonplace.

As per now, John Teira has an upper hand. This NRM guy has splashed lots of money. He has the most posters and has given out the most logistics. At rallies, everyone seems to be shouting and holding placards of Teira.

The hardest bit about these campaigns is when you have to be a political prostitute. As campusers, our slogan is tufuniramuwa (what do I get in return for my vote) which makes it hard for the contestants to differentiate between their genuine supporters and those after their logistics.

Had it been the adult suffrage kind of voting where people lined up behind their candidates, many hypocrites would have been exposed.

However, with this secret ballot thing, one can support a candidate for money and never vote for them (we all know what happened to Castrol).

It even gets harder when you owe something to all candidates because you risk being branded a political prostitute.

Teira facilitated me with pens while Musangala always gives me academic materials. Kamau helped me learn how to read cases and write legal essays. Ruto is the only lady in the race and as a lady, I would want to support her.

Denis Pato always smiles at me and says ‘hello’. Shaban is the hottest dude I’ve met on campus; any straight lady would be lured by his looks to vote him. Enap is calm and gentle, while Otteran shares party affiliations with me.

So, should I follow all of them during their rallies or sit back and not vote for any of them. I am confused about whom to vote and many people are in the same boat.

So dear candidates, do not get excited thinking all those who shout: “Wee Wee.... are in your camp.” Some just want something to put in their stomachs.
