Marriage is still important

I read with no interest Lulu Itipa’s letter entitled “The marriage institution has outlived its usefulness” (The New Vision, March 11). As a true African, I would argue that the role played by the marriage institution in most African communities should not be underestimated.

It should be noted that the marriage institution is God’s idea. For this reason, the institution cannot outlive its usefulness. The usefulness of the marriage institution is obvious to most Africans, except those who are culturally perverted or blind.

In the African context, the argument that “it will become obvious that marriage is no longer useful and should be shunned” seems to reveal dangerous thinking.

In addition, Itipa’s statements such as “a man only needs a sperm, an ovum and a surrogate mother while a woman only needs a sperm since she is able to carry the foetus herself” are destructive to true Africans.
