THE Cranes left for Bujumbura yesterday in a buoyant mood for the Africa Nations Championship encounter with Burundi.
“We are set. We should be able to get a good result,†promised team manager Crispus Muyinda shortly before the contingent’s departure.
FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa was at Entebbe airport to see off the team. “Go and make the national flag fly in honour,†Mulindwa told the players.
He delivered training and travel allowances then promised a winning bonus. He reminded the team of the fruits of a good show in Bujumbura.
“Good performance in this competition will certainly also translate into good results in the forthcoming Nations Cup. So go and win in Bujumbura.â€
Should the Cranes make it past Burundi, they will book a date with arch-rivals Kenya with whom they are also grouped with Guinea Bissau and Angola in the Nations Cup.
The African Nations Championship, also referred to as African Championship of Nations or CHAN, is a football tournament which was introduced in 2007.
It excludes foreign based players of the respective national sides. The first tournament was held in 2009.
Ivory Coast hosted the inaugural finals that was won by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Uganda is out to improve on its performance in the maiden edition where they were ejected by Tanzania 3-1 on aggregate in the first round. The Cranes that year beat Eritrea 5-2 in the preliminaries.
