FIVE people were yesterday killed in an accident involving a Kampala-bound Gateway bus and a commuter taxi.

According to the Mayuge district Police commander, Nazarius Mugisha, the head-on collusion, which occurred at 5:00am, happened at Buwanga village in front of the Magamaga Police Post on the Jinja-Iganga highway in Mayuge district.

Mugisha said two people travelling in the taxi from Mbiko heading to Mbale died instantly. The dead included a pregnant woman only identified as Saleh. She was reportedly heading to Iganga Hospital to give birth. The other person was the taxi driver, Rogers Naguyo, a resident of Mbiko.

According to Mugisha, Mohammed Mudini, a Kenyan, died when the bus fell on him after he jumped out.

Two other people, whose identities had not yet been established, died at Iganga Hospital.

The injured passengers included three of the 68 passengers who were travelling in the bus and the husband of the pregnant woman, only identified as Saleh.

Rose Yagadde, a resident of Buwanga village located near the scene of the accident, said she heard a loud bang and rushed outside to see what had happened.

“The bus had overturned and the passengers were screaming for help. When I reached the scene, the beheaded body of the taxi driver was still in its seat and a pregnant woman’s body was in the middle of the road. The kid was still kicking in the womb, maybe gasping for oxygen,” she narrated.
Mugisha attributed the accident to reckless driving by both drivers.

James Rumanyika, the Mayuge traffic Police chief, said operations to net indisciplined drivers have been intensified.
