NUSURA Tiperu is a Ugandan representative in the East African Legislative Assembly. She usually dresses in bitenge.

“I love bitenge because they promote African culture and I am proud to be an African,” Tiperu confesses.

She says whenever she goes to Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya or DR Congo; she buys dozens of bitenge and takes them to Congolese tailors on Bombo Road.

Tiperu is unable to tell the price of the material of the kitenge she is wearing but says tailoring cost her sh45,000. Such bitenge are available at sh37,000 in shops around Kampala and tailoring can be done at sh25,000 in town depending on one’s bargaining power.

She parted with $130 (about sh260,000) for her Mine West shoes from the US but a similar pair can be got from uptown shops at sh111,000 while in arcades, they cost sh70,000 and for only sh35,000 one can get them downtown.

Her earrings and bangle cost her sh32,000 but one can only part with sh16,000 to get similar ones from shops around town.

Her Afro-tint hair style was done at sh35,000 from a salon in town. In downtown salons, such hair can be done at sh8,000. You only need sh160,000 to look like Tiperu.
