What was your first job? Where and when was it? How much did you earn then?
My first job was working as a staff trainee at Shell Uganda Limited in 1960. I was earning sh10,200 per year.

What is the most enduring memory of your first job?

My first assignment was to gather statistics for the whole country, yet I was still an amateur. It was so challenging. I didn’t know where to start or end!

What did you learn from it that makes you a better boss?

The hierarchy of command at Shell taught me that each employee must do specific role according to their titles for the firm to succees. A manager manages, but not an office attendant. People love to have big titles at work just to brag to friends.

Did the first job change your career path or perspective of life?

It did not because by that time I had just finished my degree at Makerere University and wanted to go for a masters in business administration in the US.
