OLYMPIC chiefs from the Africa Zone Five have concluded consultations on sports issues of interest to the region. They have also come up with a common stand on the zone’s recent elections.

At the 10-nation polls in Nairobi in November last year, six countries including Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan and Burundi walked out, but the exercise went ahead despite a lack of quorum.

Led by the Ugandan chief, Roger Ddungu, the six members will forward a petition to Ivorian Lassana Palenfo, the President of the Association des Comites Nationaux Olympiques d’Afrique (ANOCA) at the continental meet next month in Cairo, Egypt.

“We are petitioning about the elections because the other four countries-Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and Egypt decided to involve outgoing executive members in the process which is illegal.

They also went ahead to vote in our absence, without quorum” explained Peninah Kabenge, general secretary of the Uganda Olympic Committee.

Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania chiefs, and their Uganda Olympic Committee counterparts, attended the one-day Kampala summit.
