IN order to achieve sustainable development during the rehabilitation of northern Uganda there is need to invest more in education.

The education minister, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, said this while commissioning classroom blocks, office blocks and pit-latrines constructed by Child Fund International. The ceremony was held at Lukome and Pageya primary schools in Bungatira sub-county, Gulu district on Friday.

Bitamazire urged the people of northern Uganda to work with the Government in rehabilitating the region after the two-decade insurgency that destroyed a lot of infrastructure.

“We should all commit ourselves to the reconstruction, rehabilitation and development of the region. This should start with education because it is key in any development,” she said.
Bitamazire was grateful for the help from development partners in the reconstruction programme.

The minister also handed over scholastic materials, including mattresses, to Patrick Otim and Boniface Akena, who were former pupils of Pageya Primary School who got first grades in the 2009 Primary Leaving Examinations.

The resident district commissioner, Col. Walter Ochora, urged teachers not to always cry out about little pay, saying that is why they are sometimes reluctant to teach.

Child Fund International director Simba Machingaidze said education is fundamental in the livelihood of a child. She called upon the Government to invest more resources in solving challenges still faced by children in the north.
