THE king of Rwenzururu, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, has sent a sympathy message to the Kabaka of Buganda over the destruction of the royal tombs at Kasubi in the March 16 inferno.

In a letter to Kabaka Ronald Mutebi, Mumbere described the incident as profoundly shocking.

“It is sad. the fire has robbed Buganda kingdom, of a precious heritage. It has grieved us all,” he said.

Mumbere expressed hope that the perpetrators of “this sacrilege, if it was not an accident, would be apprehended and brought to book.”

Fire burnt down the royal tombs which have been in existence for over 130 years.

The main structure, a thatched mausoleum, was destroyed in the inferno. It housed the remains of Kabaka Muteesa I, Mwanga Basammula, Daudi Chwa and Sir Edward Muteesa II, Kabaka Mutebi’s father.

Both the central and the Buganda governments are carrying out probes into the possible cause of the inferno that turned the historical site and all its regalia to ashes.
