RAPPER GNL Zamba first appeared at Club Silk’s Unplugged show together with rapper Navio, last year.

The two popular local rappers pulled off what was billed to be the most successful Unplugged session in the recent history of the show.

That seemed to take many music fans by surprise because these were rappers after all, a genre that was not believed to have as much sway with local concert goers.

The biggest significance of that show, therefore, was to convey the message that hip-hop had ‘arrived’.

Fast-forward to last Thursday. GNL Zamba was back on that Unplugged podium in Silk Lounge but this time alone.

Whereas no doubt he would attract a reasonable audience, some were skeptical he would pull off a successful show, solo.

Oh, but he did more than pull off a great performance and attract a mammoth crowd; he replicated the success of the first joint show!

In fact, as one critic summarised GNL’s show: “It was great fun, but the pain inflicted by the congestion almost ruined it.”

Although there were other social functions around the city that could have diverted a number of fans; Silk Lounge was menacingly filled up beyond capacity.

The show kicked off in time with few curtain raisers, and later, GNL rolled out his songs one by one as excited fans cheered him from the beginning up to the end.

Like other popular artistes who hold unplugged music shows; GNL performed to the fans’ expectations and truly thrilled them. In fact, the show was a manifestation of his popularity.

There was something new and good about the rapper and his music. The show attracted rare fans like Ange Noir boss, Charlie Lubega.

Such was the show’s success that at one point, fans took over from the rapper as they sang the lyrics, totally drowning him out.

For the two hours he spent on stage, the rapper treated his fans to great fun and most of them looked satisfied with the performance and arrangement.

GNL’s clout was in as much the superiority of his sound as the songs. As with most of the popular music shows in Silk Lounge, when music was temporarily put on halt, the screams filled the venue, with fans asking for encore.

The collaboration he did with Blu*3’s Lilian was one of the highlights.
