A group of Police officers will begin a VIP protection course this week. The course will be conducted by the Special Forces Unit, formerly known as the Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB).
This follows a directive by the Commander-in-Chief, President Yoweri Museveni, who said some functions of the army should be handed over to the Police, the army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye, said yesterday.
In a separate interview, Lt. Eddy Candiga, the acting spokesperson of the Special Forces, confirmed the training. He said it will enhance cooperation between the Police and the army.
A source who sought anonymity said about 300 Police officers would undergo training to be conducted at Kasenyi Military Base, on the shores of Lake Victoria.
As Uganda prepared to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2007, another Police contingent was trained by the PGB at Kasenyi.
