D’MARK Power sounded an early warning ahead of the league season when they clinched their first title at the inaugural FUBA Sprite Super Challenge on Saturday.

Having strengthened the squad earlier in the year by signing 2008 regu¬lar season top scorer Boniface Okello, Isaac Lugudde, Emma Enabu, Carol Bisereko and Robert Mubiru, it was a wake up call that Andrew Bazira sounded to his players.

They beat KIU Titans 77-68 in the final, but more importantly they had overcome rivals and league champions Kyambogo Warriors 71-65 in the semi finals.

“This is a boost for us. It prepares us for the league next weekend,” said Power coach Bazira.

In a repeat of the finals at the UCU Invitational two weeks ago, this time round Power challenged the Titans in a breathtak¬ing game that saw Norman Blick return with 22 points and Okello add 10 to inspire the side to victory.

Power had shocked reigning league champi¬ons, Warriors when they in a thrilling semi-final on Friday, in a repeat of last year’s league final.
In the women’s encounter, the UCU Lady Canons posted another shock with a 65-58 humiliation of A-1 Challenge.

Power and the Lady Canons walked away with sh2.5m each, while the runners up pocketed sh1.5m. The men’s semi-finalists received sh1m each.

KIU Rangers and Makerere Sparks, the women semifinalists earned themselves sh500,000 each courtesy of Sprite.
