THREE MPs from Busoga region have met with the management of Kakira Sugar Works over reports that the company plans to grab land in Buyengo sub-county in Jinja district.

Daudi Migereko, the Government chief whip and MP for Butembe county, Medi Mulumba (Luuka county) and Frederick Mbagadhi Nkaayi (Kagoma county) met with the Kakira team led by Kamlesh Madhvani on Thursday.

The meeting followed an incident where Jinja district officials stopped the sugar company from opening up boundaries of 500 acres of land in Kamigo after residents said it was grabbing their land.

The locals argued that they had occupied the land for over 20 years, making them bonafide occupants according to the Land Act.

The company, however, said it obtained a freehold title for the land in 1938.

“There are allegations that Madhvani is grabbing land in Busoga region, starting with Kamigo in Kagoma constituency, in Kamuli district and also in Nakabugu and Irongo in Luuka county. There is no grabbing land by Madhvani in Busoga,” Migereko told journalists after the closed meeting.

He said the land belongs to Madhvani, who has a free-hold title and appealed to the residents not be used by politicians to incite violence.

“Kakira Sugar Works only wants to open up boundaries at their 500 acres of land in Kamigo in order to register the current occupants. No one will be chased away. As legislators representing the areas, we have discussed the matter with the management and hope to get a solution,” Migereko said.

S.K Iyengar, the company secretary, said sugarcane supplies to the factory had reduced to about 50% and appealed to the outgrowers to increase their supply.

The company also issued a statement after the meeting, calling for calm among the residents, saying nobody would be evicted and that development would be carried out according to the law.
