JAS Mangat was denied a podium finish when he bowed out of the 58th edition of KCB Safari Rally in Nairobi on Sunday with only two sections remaining.

The Ugandan was the biggest casualty after retiring with a blown engine in their Subaru Impreza. He was lying in eighth position at the time of the mishap.

“It is a bad Easter Sunday for me. I had hoped to return my machine in a respectable position but engine failure foiled my plans,” a disappointed Mangat said after crashing out.

Kenya put its grip firmly on the event with Lee Rose winning the famous round of the African Rally Championship yesterday.

“Winning one of the biggest events for the second time in my career is a milestone in our family. My family, service crew and sponsors Wladoil Racing have made it possible for me to score historic victory. It is a big day,’’ said Rose.

The ARC title remains in the hands of Jamie Whyte of Zimbabwe for the time being, following his third overall place in the rally, driving a Subaru Impreza. The reigning African Champion won the Tanzania’s round in March.

Peter Horsey was placed fifth in their Mitsubishi Lancer with Uganda’s Moses Matovu, but who is currently running under a Tanzanian license.
