PRIME Minister Apolo Nsibambi and his wife, Esther, have contributed sh10m towards the reconstruction of the Kasubi royal tombs, gutted by fire last month.

Handing over the money to the Katikkiro (Buganda prime minister), John Baptist Walusimbi, Nsibambi said they had been upset by the news of the fire.

The hand-over took place at Nsibambi’s residence. The premier is still on sick leave after he sustained injuries in a plane mishap in early March.

“It is our prayer that the tombs are reconstructed in a durable manner so that such a horrible incident does not reoccur,” he said.

Fire gutted the traditional burial ground of Buganda’s kings on March 16, sparking off an emotional outcry from the Baganda.

The place has since been sealed off as an over sh10b reconstruction project kicks off. Nsibambi rapped elements spreading rumours that the Government had a hand in the inferno.

He said it was unthinkable for the Government to destroy a national monument it restored.
He commiserated with the Kabaka of Buganda and President Yoweri Museveni over the incident.

The Katikkiro thanked Nsibambi for his contribution, saying they needed billions to restore the 130-year-old historical monument.

“We are still far away from the targeted amount but we shall get there eventually. This is not only a Buganda heritage but a highly cherished national monument,” he said.

Other bank accounts, he added, are going to be opened so that there are enough collection points.
