A REKNOWN researcher, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, who was recently appointed to head the Makerere University Institute of Social Research (MISR), is yet to join the university.

Makerere appointed Mamdani at the beginning of February and his five-year contract was supposed to take immediate effect.

However, almost two months after his appointment, Mamdani is still lecturing at the New York-based Columbia University, where he has been director of African studies for four years.

His position at Makerere is being held by Dr. Frederick Golooba, a longtime research fellow at the university.

Sources say Mamdani has not taken up Makerere’s job offer due to low pay.

“The media reported that Makerere was to pay Mamdani over sh20m per month but that was not true. It was impossible for him to tolerate the poor salaries we receive,” a source said.

As a director, Mamdani is to receive sh2.8m gross monthly salary, the university human resources director, Sebastian Ngobi, said yesterday.

The university vice- chancellor, Prof. Venastius Baryamureeba, refuted the allegations that Mamdani had turned down their job offer.

“He had some work to complete at the Columbia University. He will report on July 1,” he explained.

University officials added that the sh2.8m remuneration would not turn Mamdani away.

“When we interviewed him, he said his goal was to come back and contribute to rebuilding Makerere. He had no problem with the pay,” Ngobi stated.

Baryamureeba explained that although Mamdani had not yet reported at Makerere, he was in contact with the staff at the institute online. Efforts to get a comment from Mamdani were futile.

Mamdani was appointed in December last year to replace Dr. Nakanyike Musisi, whose contract expired after 10 years of service.
