Bududa district chairperson Wilson Watira has asked for more 660 family tents in Bulucheke camp as a way of eliminating impersonators who illegally occupy the large tents to access services.

“People living around the camp are pretending to be victims of the landslide. They enter the big tents at night with their families so that they can access services. Others are brought in by relatives. We request for more family tents because they are easy to monitor,” Watira said.

He told The New Vision that the camp has only 240 family tents yet it has about 900 registered households with 3,746 people. “The number of families has increased by over 50,” Watira said.

He said the large tents are being used by the youth and those with small families. Watira hailed those who donated the smaller tents, saying they have changed the lives of the victims by reducing congestion.

“Congestion had brought in various diseases in the camps. Children were the most affected,” Watira said. He said the district leaders and the Uganda Red Cross Society were identifying the impersonators to push them out of the camp.

Michael Musene, 20, said: “We are 40 in one tent but before, the number was 60. We ask the authorities to further reduce the number so that we can observe cleanliness.”

The tent houses youth aged between 10 and 20 years. Some of us lost all our parents and we are now cooking for ourselves, this makes life very difficult,” Musene added.
