KENYAN riders set the pace in four of the five classes, but their Ugandan counterparts had the last laugh in the Fresh Cuts FIM Central Africa Motocross challenge on Sunday.
Team Uganda riders gathered 1722 points, beating the visitors by 762 points in the contest at Shell Garuga race track in Entebbe. The return leg is set for Nairobi in October.
In a fierce and eventful MX 1 battle that pitied Uganda’s Asaf Natan and Arthur Blick against Kenyan ace Shivam Vinayak, the Kenyan emerged supreme with 64 points.
Vinayak claimed the second heat that saw Natan retire after a clash with another rider.
Asaf won the first and third heat but settled for third position, having not scored points in the second.
Blick was second having finished second in the first and third heat, and third in the last heat.
Uganda ’s Maxim Van Pee beat Kenyan Cruz Mungai to come top in the MX 2 class. Kenyans Ivan Guya, Githuku Munga and David Murigi topped the 85cc, 65cc and 50cc categories.
Ugandan infants Butt Uzear, Rols Tiara, Ali Omar and Alister Blick reaped big for the team when they finished second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.
“I am impressed we performed well in such a tough contest. We piled pressure on them. We definitely have to up our game to beat them in Nairobi,†Uganda’s team captain Arthur Blick said.
