EDITOR—Sometime last year, I purchased a data card - 0777791719 from MTN Uganda at their sales offices on Crested Towers building. After one month, I went back to reactivate my monthly internet subscription.
I was informed that the number is a postpaid line belonging to Research Triangle, an International NGO in Kampala! They refused to activate the line insisting the card was not mine and it was cut off due to the outstanding bills!
The next day, I took my receipts to MTN to prove that the line was mine. They agreed to activate my connection after I threatened to sue them.
Someone apologised and promised to contact management about the issue. Later, I got an e-mail confirming that the number was mine and an apology for the error with promises that management had already sorted out the issue. I have since been working outside the country.
I returned last week and went to MTN to activate my connection but I was told by the customer care people that the number belonged to Research Triangle and was not mine. Why would MTN allocate me a number already registered in another name? Why did it taken so long to correct the error after the earlier communication when I presented the receipts and simpack? Can someone at Research Triangle say if they own this line (0777791719)?!
Apolo Leeman Becura Kampala
MTN’s response: The issue raised by Apolo was investigated and indeed it was found that there was a mix-up between his number and a similar number belonging to RTI.
We regret the inconvenience this has caused and have since rectified the issue.
