THE National Drug Authority (NDA) is to construct a laboratory extension at the national quality control laboratory at Mulago Hospital. The laboratory is the quality control and assurance department of the authority.

Fredrick Ssekyana, the spokesman, said the extension would create space for more laboratory activities.

The extension will accommodate new equipment like the condom testing machine, which NDA received recently.

“We have several new testing machines we got from donors. They all need space,” Ssekyana said.

He added that the project shall also boost the lab’s capacity and service delivery.

The current laboratory, which was handed over to NDA by the Government in 1999, is not enough to accomplish the available workload.

The major service offered by the national quality control laboratory is testing of drugs, medical devices and other health care products.

It ensures that these are done in line with international standards.

“The lab has a quality system to ensure that all activities follow good laboratory practice,” said Ssekyana.

Meanwhile, the National Drug Authority plans of install a wide area network laboratory for information management systems to ease data analysis.
